Worth knowing
Westerly Yachts; cover, cost and conditions
Westerly built cruising yachts between 6 and 14 metres in England from the sixties into the nineties, many of them with bilge keels for drying out in tidal waters. With more than 2,400 boats the Centaur is one of the most built yachts in Europe. The yard is history, the boats are sailing.
The bilge keel is interesting in insurance terms: it allows the boat to dry out and is more robust in a grounding than a single deep keel. On yachts of this age two points are critical, the keel bolts and the standing rigging. Both are wear and tear and are not covered, and both are to be checked on a forty year old yacht. A survey before purchase is the most sensible investment on these boats.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Are the keel bolts and the rig insured as well?
As wearing parts no. Covered is damage caused by an event: loss of the keel through grounding is covered, loss through corroded bolts is not. Have both checked.

For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
