Campion Marine; cover, cost and conditions
Campion builds bowriders and cabin boats in British Columbia for rough coastal waters, and the hulls are laminated robustly to match. The European portfolio consists predominantly of Allante models with a sterndrive. For the insurance the drive is the point at which it becomes expensive: a sterndrive is the first component to be hit in a grounding, and replacing it regularly runs into five figures.
Grounding is therefore the element of cover you should pay attention to. It is part of the full hull cover, not of the limited hull cover. Anyone who insures their boat only with limited hull cover is protected against storm, fire and theft, but stands alone after contact with a shallow. On inland waters with changing levels and in the Baltic with its stony grounds this is not a theoretical case.
Canadian imports bring a second question with them: the papers. For the insurance the proof of purchase is enough for us; for operating the boat in Germany you need registration marks or a boat registration document depending on the waters. Taking out cover before handover is worthwhile, because then the transport from the dealer to the berth is covered as well.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is the sterndrive of my Campion insured as well?
Under full hull cover yes, including damage caused by grounding. Under limited hull cover grounding is not included; on boats with a sterndrive this is the most important difference between the levels.
Do you insure boats that have been imported from North America?
Yes, regardless of place of purchase and previous owners. What is needed is proof of purchase, the year of construction and the technical data; a CE certificate is not a prerequisite for cover.

For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On a fishing boat the gear is often worth more than expected: sounder, trolling motor and rods are covered as equipment if they are listed.
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value. Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
