Worth knowing
Anka Boote; cover, cost and conditions
Anka built GRP boats in Sweden for angling and leisure use, and today these are mostly out on German inland waters and in the Baltic as used boats. On a boat of this age the question of value is simple and the question of condition is decisive: GRP hulls from the seventies and eighties have laminate age, and osmosis is a real issue in these build years.
Osmosis is not an insured event when it arises from ageing, it is material fatigue. Our policy covers osmosis damage in the Premium tariff for boats up to an age of 48 months; on a forty-year-old boat this is no longer a matter of insurance but a purchase decision. When buying, have the moisture in the laminate measured, it costs little and decides the value.
For the policy itself, third-party liability is the product on these boats and hull insurance is a matter of arithmetic. With a boat value in the low four-figure range, the hull premium over several years bears no sensible relation to the possible replacement. Third-party liability, by contrast, costs around forty euros a year and covers the only loss that can really become large.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is osmosis covered on an old boat?
No. We cover osmosis in the Premium tariff for boats up to an age of 48 months; on a forty-year-old hull it is a purchase decision, not an insured event.
Is hull insurance worthwhile at a low boat value?
Often not. At a four-figure value, third-party liability is the product, it covers the only loss that can really become large.
