Torqeedo of Gilching builds electric drives for boats, from the Travel for tenders and dinghies to the Deep Blue for yachts. Anyone running on electric power has a different most expensive component than someone with a combustion engine: the battery.
This is exactly where the contracts part ways. In many other sets of conditions the drive battery counts as a consumable part and is therefore excluded from replacement, at costs that make up a large part of the value of the boat. With us the battery belongs to the insured drive. Check this point in every quotation you compare; it is the most important one for electric boats and it is never on the first page.
The second point is charging. Damage that occurs during charging, to the boat, to the pontoon or to the charging infrastructure of the marina, is a liability matter and runs through the third-party liability. Also pay attention to the waters: on many lakes where combustion engines are banned, electric drive is expressly permitted. That is one of the reasons why Torqeedo drives are so widespread in Austria and Bavaria.

Is the drive battery insured as well?

May I use an electric drive on lakes that are closed to combustion engines?
On many of them yes, in Austria and Bavaria that is the normal case. The rules are specific to each body of water, though, so ask before buying and we will tell you what applies on your lake.

As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On an electric boat the battery is the largest single item. It belongs in the sum insured, otherwise the most expensive part is missing in a total loss.
