Torqeedo conversions; cover, cost and conditions
Torqeedo is the most widespread manufacturer of electric boat drives, and a considerable proportion of the electric boats on German waters are conversions: an existing boat is given a Torqeedo drive with a battery instead of a combustion engine. For the insurance the conversion is the decisive event, it changes the value, the type of propulsion and the risk profile and has to be reported.
A conversion of the propulsion that has not been reported is an increase in risk. In the event of a claim this leads to discussion and can reduce the payment, even if the damage has nothing to do with the propulsion. Reporting is straightforward: type of drive, power output, battery capacity and the business that carried out the conversion. Keep the invoice; it is proof of value and proof of proper workmanship in one.
With the battery, the installation decides the cover. Torqeedo batteries are built for use on boats and are safe when they are installed and charged as specified. Fire and thermal runaway are covered in our hull insurance, including consequential damage to the boat. A self-assembled battery pack made from third-party cells, on the other hand, is not an insurable risk; in the case of conversions carried out yourself, please ask beforehand.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Do I have to report the conversion?
Yes. A conversion of the propulsion that has not been reported is an increase in risk and can reduce the payment, even for damage unrelated to the propulsion.
Is a self-built battery pack covered?
No. Manufacturer batteries installed properly are covered; self-assembled packs made from third-party cells are not. In the case of conversions carried out yourself, please enquire beforehand.

Series by Torqeedo-Umbauten, with value and cover
Elektrifizierte Segelyacht 9 to 14 m is an electric boat from Torqeedo-Umbauten (Germany), built since 2012, and today changes hands at between €45,000 and €190,000.
Electrified classics 6 to 9 m is an electric boat from Torqeedo-Umbauten (Germany), built since 2010, and today changes hands at between €25,000 and €90,000.
Converted boat is a motorboat from Torqeedo-Umbauten (Germany), built since 2010, and today changes hands at between €15,000 and €90,000.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On an electric boat the battery is the largest single item. It belongs in the sum insured, otherwise the most expensive part is missing in a total loss.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
