Shetland builds compact GRP cabin boats between 4 and 6 metres in England, plain boats for canals, rivers and sheltered coast, widespread in Great Britain and the Netherlands. They are inland boats in the classic sense: small engines, low speed, durable hull. For insurance, inland boating means above all locks, bridges and other boats in narrow water.
The most frequent damage on inland waters does not occur under way but while manoeuvring, mooring, locking, turning in the canal. It is damage to your own boat from contact with sheet piling, lock wall or neighbouring boat, and damage to the neighbouring boat caused by your own. The former is covered by the full hull cover, the latter by third-party liability. For inland boaters the combination of the two building blocks is therefore the sensible basic set-up, not hull insurance alone.
