Worth knowing
Home-built boats; cover, cost and conditions
Home-built boats are insurable like any other craft; the method of construction does not decide insurability, but type, value, year of construction, power and cruising range do. What is different with a home build is the evidence: there is no yard invoice, no catalogue price and no depreciation table.
For the value of a home build, what counts is what has gone into it: material, engine, rig, equipment and the labour. We record an agreed value on the basis of a valuation report, and a surveyor needs documents. Keep invoices, photographs from the building period and construction drawings; with a properly documented home build the valuation is routine, with an undocumented one it becomes a negotiation. For the first contact with the water the rule is: register the boat before craning.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Can I insure a boat I have built myself?
Yes. What matters is a valuation report as the basis for the agreed value, so keep invoices, photographs from the building period and construction drawings, they are the evidence.

As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides. A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
