Sealegs builds amphibious boats in New Zealand, with aluminium or GRP hulls and a hydraulically extending three-wheel undercarriage with which the boat drives out of the water under its own power. For areas without a slipway and for beach moorings this is the practical solution. In insurance terms it is a special case: the undercarriage is boat technology, but it moves on land.
As permanently installed technology the undercarriage is covered by hull insurance and, with its considerable value, belongs in the sum insured. For journeys on land there is a limit that you should know: boat third-party liability covers the use of the boat, not participation in road traffic. Anyone driving a Sealegs on a public road needs the appropriate registration and cover for that; the route across the beach is included, the public road is not.

Licence
A powerboat licence (inland or coastal) is required from 15 hp (11.03 kW).
Registration
