Plastex Composite; cover, cost and conditions
In Finland, Plastex builds racing kayaks and racing canoes from composite material for competition use, boats that are in service in European clubs and national teams, with values in the mid four-figure range. Competitive use is the point that determines the policy.
Races are not included in standard hull insurance. With a racing kayak, however, competition is the purpose of the boat, and the typical damage occurs there: collision on the lane, damage while putting the boat in and taking it out under time pressure, damage in the boat store at the regatta course. Here the inclusion is not an option but the precondition for a policy that makes sense.
For clubs there is also the question of use. A boat that is used by changing athletes is not private use, so register the club operation with the number of boats and the type of use. We underwrite club fleets and put a list with individual values into the policy, which considerably simplifies the handling of a claim.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is competition covered?
Only with express inclusion. With a racing kayak practically all relevant damage occurs in competition; without that inclusion the policy is worth little.
How do I insure a club fleet?
As registered club use with a list of the individual values. That considerably simplifies the handling of a claim.
The cover that fits
Für Plastex zeichnen wir keine eigene Bootshaftpflicht, dafür greift in der Regel Ihre Privathaftpflicht. Kasko, Rechtsschutz und Unfallschutz versichern wir wie bei jedem anderen Fahrzeug.

Nautical information What counts before you cast off, papers, equipment, waters
Licence
No licence required; muscle-powered craft are licence-free, federal waterways included.
Registration
No registration required. Some waters do ask for a local permit or sticker before you launch.
Waters
Inland lakes, rivers and the coast, mind nature-reserve rules; many stretches are closed seasonally.
Equipment
Buoyancy aid or lifejacket, buoyancy bags in the boat, spraydeck, a waterproof case for phone and papers, a whistle.
Cruising range
The agreed cruising range is stated in the policy and can be extended for a single trip at any time.
Weather
Offshore wind is the main risk: it carries you away from the bank and makes the return hard. Check wind direction and the gust forecast before you launch.
General guidance, not a complete account; what governs are the rules of the waters you are on and your boat’s manual. Current wind force and direction for your waters are shown on the Home.

As the series is still in production, parts are available and repairs are predictable. Still, set the value at replacement cost, including sails, rigging or gear you bought later.
On a kayak accident cover comes first; liability is usually handled by your private policy. Hull cover deals with theft and transit damage.
On a canoe transport and storage are the risk, not the water. Theft from the roof rack is the most common case.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
