Pirat; cover, cost and conditions
The Pirat is a German two-man dinghy from 1938 that began as a wooden boat and was later built in GRP, still an active class on inland lakes today, with a fleet that ranges from restored pre-war boats to modern GRP hulls. This span is the point: a wooden Pirat from 1955 and a GRP Pirat from 2015 are two different boats in insurance terms.
With wooden boats, determining the value is the actual work. A properly restored wooden Pirat can be worth more than a production GRP boat, and the value lies in the workmanship, not in the material. Have it established by an appraiser and set it as an agreed value. Without an appraisal the value is disputed in the event of a claim, and with a wooden boat this discussion regularly turns out to the owner's disadvantage.
For the hull insurance on wooden boats, moisture and rot are the issues that no policy covers; that is maintenance. Covered are storm damage, fire, theft, collision and transport damage. With a boat that lies ashore at the club, storm damage in winter storage is the most frequent case; secure the boat cover and shore the boat up properly.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
How do I insure a restored wooden Pirat?
With a valuation report and an agreed value. The value lies in the restoration work, not in the material; without a report it is disputed in the event of a claim.
Is rot in the wood covered?
No, that is maintenance. Covered are storm, fire, theft, collision and transport damage.

Series by Pirat, with value and cover
Pirat racing (Carbon-Rigg) is a sailing dinghy from Pirat, built since 1995, and today changes hands at between €8,000 and €22,000.
Pirat wooden build is a sailing dinghy from Pirat, built from 1938 to 2000, and today changes hands at between €1,000 and €6,000.
Pirat GRP build is a sailing dinghy from Pirat, built since 1970, and today changes hands at between €3,000 and €14,000.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repairs are predictable. Still, set the value at replacement cost, including sails, rigging or gear you bought later.
Dinghies are mostly trailed and stored ashore, and that is where most damage happens: rigging, strapping down and winter storage.
For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
