The composite versions are worth considerably more than mass produced plastic boats, and that makes hull insurance worthwhile for them.
On these boats the skeg or rudder system is the mechanical component and the most frequent point of failure. A skeg jammed by gravel in the box is an operational fault, not an insured event; a skeg box broken after contact with the bottom is a hull insurance claim. In practice the difference is usually clear. Rinse out the box after sandy beaches, that prevents the most common trouble.
For coastal paddling the cruising range counts. The North Sea and the Baltic Sea are one level, including the Kattegat and the Skagerrak; the European Atlantic coast and Scotland require the next one. For tours in Greenland or on the Faroe Islands even that is not enough, and worldwide cover is then required. Register tours in advance, then the cover is in place before you cast off. Which level is needed for a tour in Scotland?
The level with the European Atlantic coast. For the Faroe Islands or Greenland you need worldwide cover, and you should register the tour in advance.
