Old Town has been building canoes in Maine since 1898 and is one of the oldest boat builders in North America; the Discovery and Penobscot are touring canoes made of polyethylene, the Guide and Sportsman are for fishing and leisure. In Europe these are imports, mostly through specialist dealers, with values in the low to middle four-figure range.
With polyethylene canoes the repair question is the crucial point. A crack is welded, not laminated, and that does not always hold permanently. With major hull damage a constructive total loss is closer than with a composite boat. Set the sum insured according to the real replacement value including import, because with a repurchase transport and duties are added again.
Canoes are transported on a roof rack or a trailer, and a considerable share of damage occurs there. Our hull insurance covers transport damage with suitable means, and suitable means matching bars, bow and stern lines, no point loading on the hull side.
