Worth knowing
Ocqueteau; cover, cost and conditions
Since the fifties Ocqueteau has been building GRP boats with a wheelhouse between 6 and 9 metres in France; Ostrea and Timonier are work and fishing boats found everywhere on the French Atlantic coast. The boats are heavy, slow and decidedly seaworthy, with an inboard diesel and shaft drive. That is favourable for the premium: low speed means less damage energy and a lower hull risk.
With boats of this type of construction, age is not an argument against insurance, but an argument for the agreed value. Forty-year-old Ocqueteau boats are still running, and their current market value is a fraction of the repair costs. With an agreed value, the value recorded in the policy is paid in the event of a claim, not a reduced one. With boats of this service life, the agreed value is the difference between real cover and symbolic cover.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Will my forty-year-old boat still be insured?
Yes. The year of construction is included in the premium but does not exclude cover. What matters is an agreed value, otherwise the compensation is based on the current market value, and at this age that is low.

For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On a fishing boat the gear is often worth more than expected: sounder, trolling motor and rods are covered as equipment if they are listed.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value. Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
