Worth knowing
Marieholm / Vindö; cover, cost and conditions
Marieholm and Vindö are traditional Swedish yards: Marieholm built the IF-Boot as a racing classic, Vindö built classic cruising yachts in wood and later in GRP. Neither is producing any more, and their boats are sought after classics with active owners associations.
For Vindö yachts in wood the following applies: a valuation report as the basis of the agreed value, a wood surcharge from a sum insured of 20,000 euros upwards, and ageing of the wood counts as wear. With the Marieholm IF the point is racing use, the class has active fleets, and competition requires an express agreement. In both cases the agreed value is the core: the current market value of a fifty year old boat reflects nothing.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
How do I insure a classic Swedish boat?
With an agreed value based on a valuation report. For wooden hulls the surcharge from 20,000 euros upwards is added, and for racing classes the inclusion of competition as well.

For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides. A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
