Linder Aluminiumboote; cover, cost and conditions
In Sweden, Linder builds aluminium boats between three and six metres in length, light, unsinkable fishing and leisure boats that are basic equipment on the lakes in Scandinavia and are widespread in Germany as fishing boats. Aluminium is the difference that matters for insurance: no osmosis risk, no laminate age, but corrosion and deformation as issues instead.
Aluminium corrosion arises above all from galvanic corrosion, when stainless steel fittings, copper cables or an engine made of a different metal lie directly against the hull. That is a maintenance issue and not an insured event. What hull insurance covers is mechanical damage: collision, grounding, storm damage, transport damage. A dented aluminium hull can be repaired, but the dent often remains visible, and on a boat with a four-figure value that is a question of economic viability.
For most Linder owners the engine output is the decisive point. Below 15 hp no licence is required, and from 3 hp the registration requirement applies. Third-party liability is the core of the policy: a fishing boat sails in waters where swimmers, other boats and commercial shipping are on the move, and personal injury has nothing to do with the value of the boat.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is aluminium corrosion covered?
No, galvanic corrosion is a maintenance issue. Mechanical damage is covered: collision, grounding, storm, transport.
Do I need a licence?
Not below 15 hp (11.03 kW). The registration requirement applies from 3 hp, and on the Rhine the licence requirement already starts at 5 hp.

For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On a fishing boat the gear is often worth more than expected: sounder, trolling motor and rods are covered as equipment if they are listed.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
