Leopard Catamarans are built by Robertson & Caine in Cape Town and are made for a purpose that shapes their insurance: the hulls go into charter fleets in large numbers, come onto the second-hand market as ex-charter boats after five to seven years and are then taken over by private owners. Anyone buying a Leopard out of a fleet is not insuring a new boat but a craft with a dense history of operating hours, and the value should be set by a surveyor, not taken from a price list.
Two places are decisive for the hull insurance on these catamarans. First the saildrives and their diaphragms: two drives mean twice the maintenance, and water ingress through an aged diaphragm is a classic and expensive loss. Second the connection of the hulls to the bridgedeck, which on ex-charter boats can show traces after hard berthing manoeuvres. A surveyor checks both in an hour before you take the boat over, and that saves the discussion in the event of a claim.
The cruising range deserves a close look, because Leopard owners often plan blue water voyages. The Caribbean, an Atlantic crossing and the Pacific lie outside the standard range; we extend it, but need the route and the size of the crew for that. The hurricane season is the second point: for June to November we require a berth under a hurricane plan in the Caribbean or a move south, otherwise the hull insurance is suspended during that time.

Frequent questions
Can I insure an ex-charter Leopard in the normal way?
Yes. We need a current valuation survey and the operating hours of both engines. The premium is based on the surveyed value, not on the new price of the model range.
Is an Atlantic crossing covered?
Once the cruising range has been extended, yes. Register the route in advance, then the cover is stated in the policy document; a passage already sailed cannot be included afterwards.
