Worth knowing
Laser / ILCA; cover, cost and conditions
The Laser, today listed as ILCA, is the Olympic single-handed dinghy and one of the most widespread racing classes. One hull, three rig versions, strict one-design class rules. For the insurance this means a high share of racing, frequent transport and a manageable boat value.
Because ILCA sailors travel right across Europe to regattas, transport is the underestimated risk. A breakage while loading, a fall from the roof rack, a theft from the trailer at a motorway service area, those are the real cases, not the storm in the harbour. Full hull cover covers transport damage and theft; make sure that the trailer or launching trolley is included as well, because with us it runs along free of charge.
Club races are included from the Basis-Plus tariff upwards. For races with ranking status and international championships, state this when taking out the policy so that the cover fits the use. Third-party liability starts at around 39 euros a year, and for a boat with which you regularly manoeuvre close to other boats near the starting line that is money well spent.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is transport damage on the way to a regatta covered?
In full hull cover yes, and so is theft from the trailer. With dinghies, transport is the more frequent path to a loss than the berth.
Are international championships insured as well?
Club races are included from Basis-Plus. For races with ranking status and international championships, state the use when taking out the policy.

Series by Laser (ILCA), with value and cover
ILCA Radial racing is a sailing dinghy from Laser (ILCA), built since 1995, and today changes hands at between €5,000 and €11,000.
ILCA 4 / ILCA 6 is a sailing dinghy from Laser (ILCA), built since 1971, and today changes hands at between €3,000 and €8,000.
ILCA 7 Standard is a sailing dinghy from Laser (ILCA), built since 1971, and today changes hands at between €4,000 and €9,000.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repairs are predictable. Still, set the value at replacement cost, including sails, rigging or gear you bought later.
Dinghies are mostly trailed and stored ashore, and that is where most damage happens: rigging, strapping down and winter storage.
