Klepper Faltbootwerft; cover, cost and conditions
Klepper has been building folding kayaks since 1907, and the Aerius is the best-known folding kayak in the world, a wooden frame with a boat skin that fits into two packsacks and is assembled in twenty minutes. In insurance terms this design is a special case: most of the time the boat exists as luggage and is only put together for paddling.
This leads to the actual risk: theft. A Klepper in its packsack sits in the cellar, in the car, on the platform or in the hotel room, and it is valuable, a new Aerius II costs a four-figure sum, restored classics sometimes more. Our full hull cover covers theft from locked rooms and vehicles. State the boat number; on a folding kayak it is on the frame and in the papers, not on the hull.
The boat skin is the component with a limited service life. It ages, becomes porous and has to be replaced after fifteen to twenty years, that is wear and tear and cannot be insured. What is covered is damage from outside: being slit open on a stone, a tear caused by driftwood, storm damage. The same applies to the frame: breakage under load is covered, rot and ageing are not. We do not offer third-party liability for muscle-powered boats.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is my folding kayak insured in its packsack?
Yes, against theft from locked rooms and vehicles. State the boat number from the papers, on the frame, not on the hull.
Is an aged boat skin covered?
No, ageing is wear and tear. What is covered is damage from outside: being slit open, a tear caused by driftwood, storm damage.

Nautical information What counts before you cast off, papers, equipment, waters
Licence
No licence required; muscle-powered craft are licence-free, federal waterways included.
Registration
No registration required. Some waters do ask for a local permit or sticker before you launch.
Waters
Inland lakes, rivers and the coast, mind nature-reserve rules; many stretches are closed seasonally.
Equipment
Buoyancy aid or lifejacket, buoyancy bags in the boat, spraydeck, a waterproof case for phone and papers, a whistle.
Cruising range
The agreed cruising range is stated in the policy and can be extended for a single trip at any time.
Weather
Offshore wind is the main risk: it carries you away from the bank and makes the return hard. Check wind direction and the gust forecast before you launch.
General guidance, not a complete account; what governs are the rules of the waters you are on and your boat’s manual. Current wind force and direction for your waters are shown on the Home.

As the series is still in production, parts are available and repairs are predictable. Still, set the value at replacement cost, including sails, rigging or gear you bought later.
On a kayak accident cover comes first; liability is usually handled by your private policy. Hull cover deals with theft and transit damage.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
