Worth knowing
Hinckley; cover, cost and conditions
Two lines stand side by side here: the Picnic Boat 34 and 40 from 1994 to the present, and the Bermuda 40 and Sou’wester with production periods from 1960 to 2000. For boats from the early years of construction, the agreed value governs which value applies in the event of a claim.
There is no deduction for depreciation ("new for old"), in the Premium tariff with no age limit. This keeps even a yacht built in the sixties or seventies calculable. We insure regardless of the year of construction, the place of purchase and previous owners, and that applies to sail as much as to power.
The Picnic Boat runs without a propeller, and that changes the pattern of damage. Grounding and collision are included in the full hull cover, as are vandalism and theft of parts including the outboard. The cruising range and the engine power feed into the premium.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is there an age limit for the agreed value?
Not in the Premium tariff. There compensation is paid with no deduction for depreciation ("new for old") and with no age limit, which is decisive for ranges with years of construction from 1960 onwards.
Is a jet drive a problem for the policy?
No. The Picnic Boat runs without a propeller, and that changes the pattern of damage. What counts for the rating are the type of boat, the value, the year of construction, the engine power and the cruising range.

Series by Hinckley, with value and cover
Hinckley Picnic Boat 34 / 40 is a motorboat from Hinckley (the USA), built since 1994, and today changes hands at between €290,000 and €890,000.
Bermuda 40 / Sou’wester is a sailing yacht from Hinckley (the USA), built from 1960 to 2000, and today changes hands at between €90,000 and €390,000.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
