Worth knowing
Herreshoff (Klassiker); cover, cost and conditions
At Herreshoff, years of build from 1900 onwards stand alongside replicas of the present day: the 12½ and the Buzzards Bay have been built from 1914 to the present day, ketches and schooners were created between 1900 and 1950. The hulls range from 4 to 20 metres. For the insurance, the valuation in the contract is the core.
NAMMERT agrees an agreed value and pays compensation with no deduction for depreciation, new for old. In the Premium tariff it applies with no age limit, which makes the difference for boats from the early years of build. Cover is granted regardless of year of build, place of purchase and previous owners, so that a replica stands within the same framework as an old original.
Because these are American classics and replicas, small series and home-built boats are expressly insurable. Third-party liability with a limit of indemnity of 10 to 50 million euros forms the basis, and limited hull cover takes on fire, storm, lightning strike and damage in winter storage.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Can a replica of the Herreshoff 12½ be insured?
Yes. NAMMERT accepts small series and home-built boats, regardless of year of build, place of purchase and previous owners. The value is agreed as an agreed value and compensated with no deduction for depreciation, new for old.
Is there an age limit for old hulls?
In the Premium tariff the agreed value applies with no age limit. This means that even a yacht with years of build from the first half of the twentieth century remains insured at the agreed value.

Series by Herreshoff (Klassiker), with value and cover
Herreshoff 12½ / Buzzards Bay is a sailing boat from Herreshoff (classic) (the USA), built since 1914, and today changes hands at between €25,000 and €120,000.
Herreshoff Ketsch und Schoner is a sailing yacht from Herreshoff (classic) (the USA), built from 1900 to 1950, and today changes hands at between €290,000 and €3,800,000.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides. A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
