Worth knowing
Hardy Marine; cover, cost and conditions
Hardy builds seaworthy displacement and semi-planing boats that stay steady even in a swell. Anyone cruising along the coast with one should read the cruising range in the policy carefully: coastal waters up to twelve nautical miles is something different from the North Sea up to twenty nautical miles, and an extension is just a phone call away, but it does not apply retroactively.
Diesel engines are the rule at Hardy. That reduces the fire risk considerably compared with petrol engines, but shifts it to the fuel system: diesel bug, meaning bacterial contamination in the tank, clogs filters and brings the engine to a standstill. The breakdown itself is not a hull insurance claim, but the consequences of an accident without propulsion are. Tank maintenance is therefore also loss prevention.
For fishing along the coast, personal accident cover is added. The most expensive loss on a small boat is rarely the boat but the person. Our personal accident cover applies to everyone on board, regardless of who invited them, and it also applies when boarding and disembarking, where most falls happen.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Does my policy also apply to the North Sea?
Only if the cruising range allows for it. Check the entry in the policy document, an extension is possible at any time, but not retroactively.
Is engine damage caused by diesel bug covered?
The engine damage on its own is not, as it counts as a consequence of maintenance. Consequences of an accident such as grounding or collision after a loss of propulsion are covered under full hull cover.

Series by Hardy, with value and cover
Hardy Fishing 17 / 20 is a fishing boat from Hardy (the United Kingdom), built from 1980 to 2015, and today changes hands at between €8,000 and €32,000.
Hardy Navigator 24 / 27 is a motorboat from Hardy (the United Kingdom), built from 1990 to 2015, and today changes hands at between €28,000 and €95,000.
Commodore 32 / 36 is a motor yacht from Hardy (the United Kingdom), built from 1995 to 2015, and today changes hands at between €75,000 and €240,000.
Hardy Family Pilot 20 SE is a motorboat from Hardy (the United Kingdom), built from 1990 to 2012, and today changes hands at between €14,000 and €42,000.
Hardy Navigator 18 / 22 is a motorboat from Hardy (the United Kingdom), built from 1990 to 2015, and today changes hands at between €18,000 and €55,000.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
On a fishing boat the gear is often worth more than expected: sounder, trolling motor and rods are covered as equipment if they are listed.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value. Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
