Worth knowing
Hans Christian; cover, cost and conditions
When buying a used cruising yacht, the question arises of what will be replaced in the event of a total loss. The models 33 and 38 were built from 1975 to 2000, the 41 and 48 from 1980 to 2005, and no new units are being added. The agreed value records the value that has been agreed, and compensation is paid with no deduction for depreciation (new for old).
The yachts are heavily built and kept in a classic style, with lengths of 10 to 15 metres. Type of boat, value, year of construction, sail area and cruising range count for the premium, never the brand. In the Premium tariff the agreed value applies with no age limit, which carries weight with years of construction from the nineteen seventies.
As cruising yachts these boats are designed for longer passages. Hull cover has neither a time window nor a night clause, and we issue the international certificate of insurance automatically in ten languages. Cover also applies in winter storage, during craning and while in transport.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
What happens to the value in the event of a total loss?
The agreed value is replaced, that is the value agreed in the contract, with no deduction for depreciation (new for old). In the Premium tariff it applies with no age limit, regardless of the year of construction of the yacht.
Does a yacht from 1975 require a special assessment?
No. We insure regardless of the year of construction, the place of purchase and previous owners. Only above a sum insured of 2.5 million euros does an individual assessment follow instead of taking out cover online.

Series by Hans Christian, with value and cover
Hans Christian 33 / 38 is a sailing yacht from Hans Christian (TW), built from 1975 to 2000, and today changes hands at between €60,000 and €190,000.
Hans Christian 41 / 48 is a sailing yacht from Hans Christian (TW), built from 1980 to 2005, and today changes hands at between €120,000 and €340,000.
For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
