Grand Marine; cover, cost and conditions
Grand builds inflatable boats and RIBs from the small tender to the nine-metre console boat, mostly with Hypalon and PVC tubes on a GRP hull. For insurance purposes the model range therefore splits into two worlds: a 3-metre tender without an engine needs no third-party liability of its own, while an 8-metre RIB with 300 hp is a fully fledged motor boat with a licence requirement, registration marking and a value in the five-figure range.
On these boats the tube is the component that matters for insurance. UV radiation, chafing against the hull side and ageing of the adhesive lead to seam damage, pure wear and tear that no hull insurance replaces. What is covered is damage from outside: being slit open on a jetty, storm damage, vandalism, theft. Check the air pressure before every trip and after changes in temperature; an overheated tube in the midday sun is a frequent and avoidable cause.
On the larger RIBs the outboard is the most expensive single item and at the same time the most sought-after prize for thieves. Theft of the engine is included in our full hull cover, including theft of the engine alone from the boat. Secure it with a lock on the clamp bracket and state the engine number in the application; without a number, identification becomes a question of proof in the event of a claim.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is seam damage to the tube covered?
Only if it was caused from outside: slitting, storm, vandalism. Ageing of the adhesive and UV damage are wear and tear and cannot be insured.
Is the outboard covered as well?
Yes, under full hull cover including theft of the engine on its own. State the engine number in the application.

Nautical information What counts before you cast off, papers, equipment, waters
Licence
Required inland and at sea from 15 hp (11.03 kW); below that, none.
Registration
Registration from 3 hp; carry the boat certificate on maritime shipping routes.
Waters
Inland lakes, the coast and the Wadden Sea, mind the tide tables and the fairway.
Equipment
Lifejackets, paddles, pump, repair kit, anchor gear and signalling equipment.
Cruising range
RIBs close to the coast; check air pressure before every trip and after temperature swings.
Weather
From Beaufort 4 the ride turns hard, and offshore wind sharply raises the risk of drifting.
General guidance, not a complete account; what governs are the rules of the waters you are on and your boat’s manual. Current wind force and direction for your waters are shown on the Home.

As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On an inflatable the cause decides, not the damage: a tear from impact is covered, porous fabric after years in the sun is not. The outboard belongs in the policy with its serial number.
