Worth knowing
Elling Yachting; cover, cost and conditions
In the Netherlands Elling builds GRP displacement yachts between 12 and 18 metres which are certified as self-righting, a property that otherwise only lifeboats have. They are motor yachts for the open sea, built for the North Sea, the Bay of Biscay and Atlantic passages. For the insurance this means that the cruising range may be chosen generously, because the yacht is designed for it.
With yachts for the open sea the salvage question is more important than with coastal boats. Salvage and towing costs are covered within the scope of the conditions, but the amount scales with the distance from the coast. Anyone planning the Bay of Biscay or the Atlantic should speak to us before the voyage; cruising range, salvage cover and deductible then need to be clarified individually, and a short call beforehand is easier than a discussion afterwards.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Do I have to report a planned Atlantic crossing?
Yes, the cruising range has to match it. Speak to us beforehand and we will clarify cruising range, salvage cover and deductible together.

Series by Elling, with value and cover
Elling E3 is a motor yacht from Elling (the Netherlands), built from 1998 to 2015, and today changes hands at between €190,000 and €340,000.
Elling E6 is a motor yacht from Elling (the Netherlands), built since 2012, and today changes hands at between €590,000 and €890,000.
Elling E4 is a motor yacht from Elling (the Netherlands), built since 2005, and today changes hands at between €420,000 and €1,200,000.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value. Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
