Discovery builds blue-water yachts of between 15 and 18 metres in England, centre-cockpit yachts with a high standard of fit-out, built for circumnavigation with a husband-and-wife crew. These are yachts for people who move their home onto the water, and the sums insured lie at the upper end of the calculator.
With yachts used as a residence, one further point arises: personal effects. Included at no extra premium are up to 3 % of the sum insured, no more than 3,000 €. Anyone living permanently on board has considerably more on board, clothing, electronics, tools, personal belongings. The excess amount must be insured for an additional premium, and on long-distance cruising this is not a side issue but the household contents.
