Dart Catamarans; cover, cost and conditions
Dart built beach catamarans in Great Britain, and the fleet today consists mainly of used boats, the Dart 18 is the most widespread model range and has been sailing on European waters since the seventies. With a boat of this age the decisive question is not the premium but the condition: hull shells from the seventies and eighties have laminate age, and fittings as well as trapeze wires are wear parts that no hull insurance replaces.
What the hull insurance does replace is the consequential damage. If an aged trapeze wire snaps and the sailor falls, the injury is a matter for the accident cover; if a breaking fitting damages the hull shell, the hull insurance pays for the hull damage. With a boat worth four figures, however, the calculation deserves a sober look: often third-party liability is the sensible policy, and hull insurance only for well maintained and upgraded boats.
Third-party liability, by contrast, is indispensable on every beach catamaran, regardless of the value of the boat. A Dart 18 reaches double-digit speeds in wind, and the size of a personal injury claim has nothing to do with the value of the boat. For around forty euros a year it is the most important part of the protection, and in many clubs and sailing areas it is a precondition for the berth anyway.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is hull insurance worthwhile for an old Dart?
With a low boat value often not. Third-party liability is the more important part; hull insurance is worthwhile on well maintained or upgraded boats with a corresponding market value.
Are broken trapeze wires covered?
The wire itself is not, it is a wear part. Consequential damage to the hull is covered under full hull cover, an injury under the accident cover.

Series by Dart, with value and cover
Dart 15 / Sprint 15 is an open catamaran from Dart (the United Kingdom), built since 1980, and today changes hands at between €3,000 and €10,000.
Dart Hawk / 20 is an open catamaran from Dart (the United Kingdom), built from 1990 to 2015, and today changes hands at between €8,000 and €20,000.
Dart 16 / 18 is an open catamaran from Dart (the United Kingdom), built from 1975 to 2020, and today changes hands at between €2,000 and €14,000.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repairs are predictable. Still, set the value at replacement cost, including sails, rigging or gear you bought later.
Open catamarans are beached and trailed, so most damage happens ashore and in transit, not on the water.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
