Corsair Marine Trimarane; cover, cost and conditions
Corsair Marine builds fast folding trimarans in Vietnam that sit between a sports boat and a cruising boat. The boats are light, start planing early and are frequently sailed on racing courses, which is the central point for the policy. Races are not included in standard hull insurance; anyone taking part in club races or open races with a Corsair needs express inclusion. Without it, a rig failure during a race is not covered.
The lightweight construction brings its own damage pattern. Corsair hulls are optimised for weight, laminated correspondingly thin and more vulnerable in a collision than a production catamaran. A repair is therefore not a matter of filler work but calls for a laminate build-up to the yard specification, more expensive than the size of the boat suggests. Set the sum insured accordingly and include the sail wardrobe, which on a racing boat accounts for a considerable share of the value.
As with all folding boats, trailer use counts. Corsairs are regularly taken to regattas by road, and part of the damage occurs in the process. Hull insurance covers road transport by suitable means, and the trailer is included at no extra premium. Pay attention to the locking of the floats and the securing of the rig; both should be checked before every journey.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Are races with a Corsair covered?
Only with express inclusion against an additional premium. We include club races and open races, so please register this before the season.
Does the sail wardrobe belong in the sum insured?
Yes, as technical equipment. On a racing boat it accounts for a considerable share of the value and should be listed separately in the application.

For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
Open trimarans are almost always trailed. Transit damage is covered, provided the load is properly secured.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On a trimaran the floats and their beams are the weak point, on folding models the mechanism as well.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repairs are predictable. Still, set the value at replacement cost, including sails, rigging or gear you bought later.
