Chaparral Boats; cover, cost and conditions
Chaparral, based in Georgia, builds bowriders and sports boats in large series, in recent years with a strong focus on surf models: ballast tanks, trim tabs and wake systems that create a shapeable wave. In insurance terms these models are a class of their own. Wakesurfing means people in the water, directly behind the boat, with the engine running. Personal injury arising from this use falls under the boat third-party liability, and the limit of indemnity should not be the smallest one here.
The second point is the ballast system itself. Chaparral surf models take several hundred litres of water into tanks inside the hull. Leaks, defective pumps and frost damage to the lines are typical loss patterns, especially when the boat goes into winter storage without being drained completely. We cover frost damage when the boat has been properly winterised, and leaving water standing in the ballast tanks is not that.
