Bester builds compact GRP fishing boats between 4 and 5 metres, simple open boats with bench seats and an engine mount, intended for lakes and calm rivers. The value is usually below 8.000 € including the engine. At this size the question is not how much hull insurance, but whether any at all: with small engines below 15 hp and a low boat value, third-party liability is the cover that counts.
If you move your boat solely by oars or with an electric motor below 3 hp, you do not need boat third-party liability with us, because your private liability insurance usually applies. As soon as a combustion engine is used, that changes, and from 15 hp onwards a licence is required in Germany on inland waters. On the Rhine this applies from 5 hp, and that is the limit that surprises most boat buyers.
