Bavaria Yachtbau; cover, cost and conditions
Bavaria Yachtbau from Giebelstadt is the largest German series boatbuilder and produces both sailing yachts and motorboats in industrial manufacturing. For insurance purposes this is an advantage: on production boats the hull, the rig and the propulsion are well documented, spare parts are available through the trade and repair costs are therefore predictable. Even so, do not value your yacht at catalogue price but at replacement value including any retrofitted electronics, because the difference can run into five figures.
The most important insurance point with Bavaria yachts is the agreed value. Because many models were built over more than twenty years, the current market value and the replacement value are often far apart. With the agreed value there is no scaling of the value by age: in the event of a claim the value recorded in the policy is paid, not a reduced one. In the Premium tariff the agreed value is unlimited and can be adjusted at any time, which makes sense after every refit.
With older Bavaria hulls from the nineties and the early two thousands, osmosis is a further topic. We cover osmosis damage in the Premium tariff for boats up to an age of 48 months; with older boats a survey belongs to the purchase, not to the claim. Anyone taking over a used Bavaria should also have the condition of the rig checked: standing rigging is a wear part, and no hull insurance replaces wear.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is a Bavaria cheaper to insure than a one-off yacht?
As a rule yes, because repair costs on production boats are easier to calculate and spare parts remain available. The premium, however, is determined by value, length, cruising range and year of construction, not by the name of the manufacturer.
Are races covered with my Bavaria?
Club races are included from the Basis-Plus tariff onwards. For races with ranking status and for rig damage during a race, please say so when you take out the policy, so that the cover fits.

For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On boats this size the condition of rig and fittings decides. A dismasting is covered, worn terminals after years are not.
For a series built in these years the market value and the replacement cost often differ widely. An agreed value removes the age-based scale, and the figure in the policy stands.
On sailing yachts the rig and the underwater hull are the expensive parts: a dismasting quickly costs a quarter of the boat, and osmosis counts as wear and is covered by no hull policy.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
On motor yachts the drive and the electronics together make up about half the value. Both belong in the valuation, otherwise the sum insured is too low.
