Worth knowing
Alumacraft; cover, cost and conditions
Alumacraft has been building aluminium fishing boats between 3.5 and 6.5 metres in Minnesota since the forties, from the simple rowing boat with a motor bracket to the fully equipped console boat. The smaller models are widespread in Europe as club and fishing boats. For boats worth less than 10,000 euros, third-party liability is the decisive building block: it costs from about 49 euros a year and covers the risk that far exceeds the value of the boat.
With small aluminium boats, people often ask whether hull insurance is worth it at all. The answer depends on the engine: a 40 hp outboard costs more than the hull, and engine theft is more common than boat theft. If you run a valuable engine, you insure it against theft under full hull cover; the condition is a means of securing it beyond the clamp screws, that is an engine lock or a security bracket.
Questions and answers
Frequent questions
Is hull insurance worth it for a simple aluminium boat?
If the engine has a considerable value, yes, engine theft is more common than boat theft and is covered under full hull cover. For the hull alone it is a matter of weighing it up.

Club waters, lakes, lagoons and the coast, mind closed seasons and restricted areas.

On lagoons and the coast check the forecast in the morning and plan the return against the wind.

For a series of this age there is no list price left. That is why we work with an agreed value: you state the figure, we agree it, and in a total loss exactly that amount is paid, with no deduction for wear.
On a fishing boat the gear is often worth more than expected: sounder, trolling motor and rods are covered as equipment if they are listed.
As the series is still in production, parts are available and repair costs are predictable. Even so, value it at replacement cost including retrofitted electronics, not at list price.
On a motorboat the drive is the single most valuable part. Damage after grounding is covered, an engine failure from wear is not.
